British Canoe Union - Personal Performance Awards

Beginner's Course - British Canoe Union 1 Star

The BCU 1 Star award is a flat water award that demonstrates you have basic boat control and foundation skills. The 1 star is a generic award and can be taken in any kind of paddlesport craft.

Improver's Course - British Canoe Union 2 Star

The emphasis on the 2 star award is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. The award gives you the opportunity to develop generic movement skills that you can transfer to any discipline. It includes an assessed journey.

Intermediate Course - British Canoe Union 3 Star

This is a discipline specific award. Our club offers courses in white water kayak, open canoe, sea kayaking, flat water kayak (touring). The 3 star paddler will be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered water.

Training & Assessment Courses

This discipline specific award is designed to indicate that you have the skill level to safely paddle and lead other competent paddlers on sections of moderate water. A 4 star paddler will have the all round paddling ability, safety, rescue and basic leadership required to undertake trips on sheltered -moderate water with a group of paddlers able themselves to be able to operate in a self-sufficient manner.

British Canoe Union 5 Star Leader

Training & Assessment Courses

A 5 star award holder has the personal, leadership and safety skills required to lead groups ( in formal and informal settings) in discipline specific advanced environments.

Our club offers 3, 4 and 5 star courses in white water, open canoe, sea kayaking and touring.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training Course

The course is designed to cover fundamental techniques for any paddler, assistant or trainee Coach. The aim is to provide you with the key safety and rescue skills in a sheltered water environment in order to be able to deal with common emergencies. These skills can then form the basis for all safety and rescue training throughout the British Canoe Union Scheme.

BCU/UKCC Coaching Awards

BCU/UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport

The Level 1 Training and Assessment course is suitable for both boat based and bank based coaches alike, in any discipline of paddlesport, recreational or competitive.

The 4 day course will cover all aspects of assisting coaching sessions for paddlers, focusing particularly on the basic coaching principles, session organisation, health and safety, equipment and safety and rescue. The majority of the course is spent out on the water n a variety of boats. The practical sessions are combined with theoritical sessions. The Foundation, Safety and Rescue Training Course is a pre-requisite. Minimum age 16 years old.

BCU/UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport

Training Course

The 4 day Level 2 Training Course is for paddlers who wish to develop their coaching skills and get involved with the on-going coaching of participants. The practical sessions are combined with theoritical sessions which embed the fundamentals of quality coaching and safety.

Assessment Course

The 1 Day Assessment course is the final step to Level 2 Coach status. This will enable you to run on-going coaching sessions and BCU 1 Star and 2 Star courses and also supervise Level 1 Coaches. You must have completed the training course, the portfolio and the CPD modules to present yourself for this award.
